Kijana Kwanza operates in and around Moshi Town, with its main headquarters located near the railway station, bordering the most deprived neighborhood in Moshi Town, Njoro Ward.
Kijana Kwanza (Young People First) is a child and youth development charity that seeks to empower a new generation of Tanzanians to become engaged, globally aware and economically independent citizens.
They achieve this by providing a safe environment for children and young people to grow, stay healthy, access formal learning, vocational training and life skills. They also support families to develop economically and provide for their own children.
Kijana Kwanza in Moshi, Tanzania.
MISSION
Their goal is for children and young people to acquire the means and abilities to become leaders, activists and change-makers. In this way, they not only benefit themselves, but also their immediate and extended families, local villages and communities, and society at large.
SUCCESSES
KIJANA KWANZA – Annual Report 2022
NEED
Since Kariwa Village is outside of the centre of town, it attracts poor families who are unable to afford the high rents. However, this comes at a cost, because local government prioritises services for the centre of town. As a result, power shortages are more severe in Kariwa Village compared to Moshi Town, and water supplies are regularly cut off.

WELL CONSTRUCTION SUMMARY
The Project entails the use of a borehole of approximately 150m in depth. Whereby specialist machinery to dig through volcanic rock and granite has been utilised. This is located on the school grounds and prioritize the needs of children at the school. The pump system is similar to that which have been installed on one of the plots, which can generate up to 10,000L of water per hour, which is stored in water tanks, so that it is immediately accessible. This project includes, a solar powered system, which would do the same with a higher capacity to generate 30,000L per day without additional electricity. This option has no regular costs for keeping the pump operational.

IMPACT STATEMENT
The implementation of a reliable water supply system was a transformative initiative that has revolutionized the daily lives of the school’s children. No longer burdened by the laborious task of looking for local streams for water, these students had the precious gift of time reclaimed, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in their educational pursuits. Beyond the classroom, this initiative paved the way of holistic well-being, as the provision of water transcended the singular purpose of quenching thirst.
Water has become the base for various essential aspects of life within the school community. The availability of water extended its accommodating reach to encompass vital domains such as sanitation, cooking, and the general upkeep of cleanliness. This all-encompassing access to water not only elevated the standard of living but also acted as a catalyst for enhanced academic engagement.
Crucially, the establishment of a clean water supply served as a guardian against the perils of contaminated water consumption. No longer did the waterborne diseases cast a shadow over the health of these children. Simultaneously, the consistent water supply ensured that the school’s facilities, especially the toilets, has a regular stream of water, fortifying the bastion of basic hygiene.
In essence, this endeavor transcended the mere provision of water; it embodied a commitment to fostering an environment where the aspirations of young minds could flourish unhindered, shielded by the fortification of clean water, and where the pursuit of knowledge was not impeded by the burden of water scarcity. This initiative stood as a testament to the belief that access to a fundamental resource could serve as the catalyst for a brighter, healthier, and more educationally enriched future.

Beneficiary Stories
Joseph’s Children in Primary School
Joseph is living with his wife, and they have 5 children. 3 children are in primary school and 2 children have not yet started school.
They live in a small hut, which is based on land that Joseph inherited from his parents. The hut had no water supply and until recently they had been fetching water from a local stream, approximately 1km from their home. Sometimes the water was visibly contaminated and on occasions, during the hot months of the year, the stream dried up and they must go further in search of water.
Now that the well at Kariwa Primary School is complete, they have access to unlimited, fresh water.
Mama Akonai’s daughter in Secondary School
Mama Akonai is a widow who lives with her 3 children in the single rented room in close proximity to Kariwa Primary School. Her first child is in secondary school (form 3) and her 2 children are in primary school.
Mama Akonai has no permanent employment, and looks for odd jobs, labouring on local farms during the harvest season or undertaking domestic chores for local families.
Until recently she had to purchase water from a local family who had a tap for all their needs including cooking, cleaning and washing their clothes. But on occasion they had to go without water, when Mama Akonai does not have enough money to buy both food and purchase additional buckets of water for washing clothes.
The new well at Kariwa Primary School is now a lifeline for the family.
James & Dorcas
Dorcas and James have lived with their grandparents, after their parents passed away. They are both in Standard 5 at Kariwa Primary School. The family live in absolute poverty and cannot afford to purchase water, and previously would collect water from a local stream to use at home. At school Dorcus and James were also responsible for fetching water for the kitchen, as the school cooks were unable to prepare meals without a water supply.
Dorcas and James are looking forward to start the new school year as they will no longer have to miss class to fetch water from a distant stream.
