Recent catastrophic flooding in India has left millions of people, including women, children and the elderly from our own community, completely stranded without access to food, shelter and security.
Ali Shroff, Secretary General of India Federation reports: “WF-Aid is on the ground assessing the situation and helping displaced families. Working with India Federation and Mumbai Jamaat, we have delivered emergency supplies, including, shelter, food, clothing and medical aid to families affected by the floods.”
The flooding was caused by extensive rain that poured down for two full days and left a huge trail of destruction behind. This was the highest rainfall recorded in the last 12 years. Sadly, our Momineen in Mumbra and Dongri have been affected, with two residential buildings, which were home to mostly Khoja families, now left unsafe and inhabitable.
Kesar bai mansion, Dongri
This used to house almost 90% of Khoja families but is now in a dangerous condition with severe internal cracks and is unlivable. The damage is so serious that the structure will need to be demolished and new housing built for the Khoja families.
Suhana Compound Society, Mumbra
There are 55 rooms which are home to mainly Khoja families. The rains have left six feet of water in the ground area, including the lower level flats, leaving the whole building in desperate need of repairs.
WF-Aid is responding to the crises by providing immediate relief to displaced families – they have taken temporary shelter with relatives and friends, whilst others have been placed in Musafir Khanas. Families affected by the flooding have been left with nothing and desperately need clean water, food and clothing. They are still at risk of water-borne diseases and malnutrition. WF-Aid are already providing emergency aid on the ground, but with your continued support we can do so much more to help those in need.
