On Sunday 27th September 2020, Stanmore Jafferys held their London to Windsor bike ride, raising over £91,000 for WF-AID’s Ali Asghar Water Appeal! Over 90 cyclists took part in the event on Sunday, where our Vice President, Dr Munir Datoo, flagged off the cyclists.
The sportive, which covered 54 miles starting from Hujjat Stanmore, is the latest in a series of fundraising initiatives held by Stanmore Jafferys in the past 12 months, starting with the London to Brighton bike ride last year. This year, the sportive went global, with participants doing similar bike rides in Dubai, Mombasa, and Toronto!
This year, the funds raised by SJ will be used to build and implement a water desalination plant in Gaza, which will help provide clean and safe water to families living in Izbat Beit-Hanoun. At the moment, there is a severe shortage of clean and safe water and an increase in the population in the area. Due to the limited access, water-related diseases are widespread, particularly amongst children and pregnant women.
The water desalination plant will contribute to the reduction of these diseases as it will provide clean drinking water to the local residents. Approximately 200 families will benefit from the plant every single day!
As well as providing water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and hygiene, the desalination plant will also provide employment opportunities, in the short term whilst the plant is being implemented, and in the long term when the plant is operational and needs maintenance.
As Stanmore Jafferys surpassed their initial target, we will also be able to implement sustainable water projects in other countries and will share details of these in the coming weeks.
WF-AID would like to thank Stanmore Jafferys, all of the cyclists, volunteers, and incredibly generous donors for their hard work and amazing efforts to raise funds for such a worthy cause. Our Ali Asghar Water Appeal runs throughout the year, providing clean and safe water to families around the world – click here to read more or make a donation.
