Yemen: Your impact in 2020

Throughout 2020, your donations have been providing urgently needed support to some of the millions of people in need across Yemen.

We have been working with our partners, who are based in the capital city Sana’a, to ensure we reach as many people as possible, from the young to the old, in several areas, providing continuous assistance to those suffering due to the ongoing conflict in the country.

Your donations have reached over 18,000 people, who have been struggling to survive through lack of employment, no access to healthcare, starvation from the bombardment of goods entering the country, and a global pandemic without access to the necessary protection.

How have we helped?

According to a report by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, it is hard to know the full scale of food shortage in Yemen although available information shows that at least 17 million people (including children) are currently in desperate need of humanitarian food assistance.

Our partners regularly distribute food packs to families in need, providing them with nutritious food items they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. as unemployment constantly increasing and people can’t afford basic necessities. Access to food in Yemen is generally very limited and the risk of famine is very high. We have been providing families with locally sourced staple items tailored to the local diet.

As a result of the ongoing conflict, there is a dire lack of access to clean and safe water. Thanks to your donations throughout the year, we have been able to implement twelve water projects, providing water to over 3,800 people on a regular basis. The water tanks and wells have been installed in areas of Sana’a and Bani Jabr – Jabal Al Tayyal where there is no access to clean and safe water at all. Due to the conflict, which has been ongoing for many years, many medical facilities have either closed or are unable to provide medical care on the scale needed. Your donations help us provide basic and life-saving medication and treatment to people in need. With the coronavirus pandemic spreading rapidly across the country, your donations allowed us to step in and open three quarantine centres with the necessary equipment, provide PPE kits and masks, and distribute hygiene kits.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Although schools are trying to continue with educating children despite the conflict, many teachers are not being paid due to lack of funding, and therefore children are studying with next to no resources. Your donations have bought 600 students school bags with some essential stationery to help them learn and work towards a brighter future.

WINTER ESSENTIALS

In Yemen, much of the year is hot and dry, so the transition to the harsh winters is extreme and dangerous for the people who don’t have adequate clothing or items to protect them from the elements. Your donations in 2020 allowed us to provide 1,000 people with blankets to keep them warm through the winter.

BUSINESS SUPPORT

As part of our aim to provide long term and sustainable support to people in need, we have been working with our partners to provide business grants to people to help them earn a living and become self-sufficient. Many people already have their own businesses but aren’t able to buy stock or expand them enough to cover their family’s expenses. Your donations provided 5 people with the economic boost they needed to get their businesses off the ground. The businesses you helped fund include a vegetable stall (image below), a goat farm, and a bus driver.
